The Rosary
Meditating with Mary

A gentle, ancient prayer that has carried souls through grief, gratitude and wonder. You do not need to be an expert. You only need to begin.

I had heard about the Rosary my whole life. I had even prayed it. But it only truly hit me when I was in one of the hardest seasons of my life and someone said to me, pray it, and you will see changes. Something in me said yes. I gave the Rosary a chance. I gave Our Lady a chance. And she did what she always does. She took me by the hand and led me straight to Jesus. That relationship I never thought I could have? It began there. This is what the Rosary does. This is why it is worth your time.

Tips for praying the Mysteries

Simple things that make the difference between praying the Rosary and truly entering it.

1
Start with the intention

Before you begin, offer the Rosary for a specific intention. A person you love, a situation you are carrying, or simply the grace to pray well.

2
Picture the scene

Each Mystery is a moment in the life of Jesus or Mary. As you pray, try to place yourself in the scene. Even a quiet awareness is enough.

3
Do not worry about distractions

Your mind will wander. Every mind does. Simply return to the words each time you notice. The act of returning is itself a prayer.

4
Let the repetition work

The repeated Hail Marys are not vain repetition. They are a rhythm that quiets the mind and opens the heart to contemplation.

5
Start with one decade if needed

You do not have to pray all five decades at once. One decade, prayed well, is a complete act of devotion. Build from there.

Myths and Facts

True or False?

Common things people believe about the Rosary, answered plainly.

The Rosary is not a requirement for salvation, but it is one of the most powerful and time-tested prayers in the Catholic tradition. Many saints and popes have spoken of its fruits. You are invited, never forced.
Catholics do not worship Mary. The Church distinguishes between latria (worship given to God alone) and hyperdulia (the special honour given to Mary). When Catholics pray to Mary, they are asking her to intercede with Jesus on their behalf. The Rosary leads us to Jesus through Mary. That is its whole purpose. Source: Catholic News Agency
Most of the words prayed in the Rosary come directly from Scripture. The Our Father is the prayer Christ himself taught in Matthew 6:9-13. The Hail Mary draws from Luke 1:28 and 1:42. The Rosary is, at its root, a scriptural prayer. Source: Catholic News Agency
An unblessed Rosary is still a valid tool for prayer. Having your Rosary blessed by a priest adds a sacramental value, but God hears your prayer regardless.
The Church teaches that we are engaged in a real spiritual battle. Saints including Pope John Paul II, Padre Pio and Lucia of Fatima all spoke of the Rosary as one of the most powerful spiritual tools given to the faithful. Source: Catholic News Agency

Common Questions

Questions people ask about the Rosary

Honest answers to the things people wonder about most.

The Rosary is a specific Marian prayer involving 20 mysteries across four sets. A Chaplet is a shorter form of prayer on beads, such as the Divine Mercy Chaplet or the Chaplet of St Michael. Both are beautiful devotional prayers.
We can and do pray directly to Jesus. Asking Mary to intercede is not instead of praying to Jesus. Just as you might ask a friend to pray for you, we ask Mary to bring our prayers before her Son. The Rosary itself leads us to Jesus through Mary. That is its whole purpose.
Yes. The Rosary is a prayer rooted in Scripture and meditation on the life of Christ. Anyone who believes in Jesus and wishes to draw closer to Him is welcome to pray it.
Yes. Many Catholics keep their Rosary close to them while sleeping as a sign of devotion and trust in Our Lady’s protection. There is no rule against it.
St Therese of Lisieux said she would fall asleep during prayer and trusted that God, like a good Father, loved her all the same. Falling asleep while praying is not failure. It is surrender. Our Lady knows your heart.
